Snapshot: Peace Park

Tucked away on the north side of the University Bridge is Peace Park, which is a small plot by the side of the road. Its main feature is a statue of Sadako Sasaki, known for folding a thousand origami cranes.

Sadako died of leukemia at age twelve, a decade after surviving the atomic bomb dropped over Hiroshima. Many people hang strings of cranes over the statue in honor of her. Even when the cranes get waterlogged, they get replaced with new cranes.

The Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima also has a statue of Sadako, and there are literally hundreds if not thousands of cranes hanging there, send from all around the world.
